MAILMEN AND MAILWOMEN KNOW

We wrote Sunday about the difference between Avenues and Courts and Drives and Boulevards, and discovered that there is no rhyme nor reason.

There really isn’t.

An urban planner can do only so much. There is a plan going in, but it all goes up in a cloud of asphalt once the bullets start flying. Read more here:

Or just go to DesignatedWriters.com and click on the cleanup hole. And there she is. (The Road — Or Avenue?, Or Street — Less Traveled.)

My favorite letter in response to the effort was this, from my ol’ pen pal Susan, who once received her mail in Tulsa, a place I’ve been but without realizing it was a mailman’s nightmare and a mix of nonsensical Terraces and Streets:

“Tulsa would drive you crazy,” she wrote.

‘“Oh, I live at 4926 B 25th Street South West…..’

“Being a mailman in Tulsa would be a Herculean task.

“My husband once told me that streets ran east and west…

“Avenues run north and south.

“I think he made that up.

“Southfield, Pierremont and Hollywood…….

“Oh well.

“My son lives at XXXX 31st Street Court East.

“And I live at 6121 Fern Avenue # X…….in Pierremont Place. (there are over 80 houses in

Pierremont Place and everyone is 6121)

“When I grew up, quite some time ago, zip codes were just coming into vogue…..

“I grew up in Broadmoor and our zip code was ‘4.’

“And stamps were 3 cents.

“Is this really progress?

“I still have a flip phone.

“Hope all is well with you no matter where you live.”

This photo from the Texas League Office is of the 1909 Shreveport Pirates, one of the earliest clubs in a town that enjoyed pro baseball for decades.

It’s part of an impressive project underway by retired (sort of, but you can’t tell by the way he produces for his blog!) sportswriter Nico Van Thyn, former boss and still mentor of the Designated Writers co-founders. He was going to turn it into a book, but instead he’s scribing it on his blog, which can be found here: https://nvanthyn.blogspot.com/

The latest post is Chapter 5, which is Shreveport baseball WAY back in the day. You can go back and catch up on the best players to come out of this area, the day The Babe came to town, and bunches more…
