I found it interesting that three networks were covering Thursday night’s NFL Draft. That’s the same number that covered the moon landings, so I guess it’s nice to know that everyone has their priorities in order.

Nobody overdoes things like the NFL, so what better place to do it than Jerry World in Arlington? They’ve come a long way from NFL executives sitting around 8-foot fold-up tables with the team helmet beside them and talking on a Princess phone to somebody back at team headquarters. (There were no “War Rooms” back then.)

I know a little bit more about Vita Vea than I did yesterday — though that name sounds like a beverage, it’s actually a University of Washington defensive tackle — and it was interesting to see the four quarterbacks go off the board early.

As I have mentioned before, the lead-up to the draft is completely insufferable, but the actual “event” itself isn’t so bad. To be honest, I actually enjoyed it. It was fast-paced, informative and not as over-the-top as before. (It wasn’t that long ago that ESPN’s Chris Berman would give the viewers some kind of tip that he knew what the pick was before it was read. That, like most things Berman, drove me crazy.)

Without getting all sappy on you, it is a life-changing day for some young men who have worked hard for this moment. It’s nice to see, even with the obligatory man-hug they all give to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

You might not know the difference between Saquon (Barkely) and Roquan (Smith), but rest assured that both are happy dudes right about now.

Salary implications aside, it really doesn’t matter from this point forward. All that the first round picks have is a head start. They can get cut just as easily as the sixth round guy. As they say, the NFL often stands for Not For Long.

After Day One, they all look like good solid selections. No one ever makes a bad pick in Round One.

Until they look back and realize they did.
