Random weekend musings:
** The Belmont Stakes made for something to do late Saturday afternoon due almost completely due to the fact that a horse was trying to win the Triple Crown. But what struck me more than watching an athletic accomplishment that is still a rarity was the magnificent beauty of the horse, Justify. I am definitely from the all-horses-look-alike school of thought, due in great part to the fact that I don’t know jack about horse racing, but it was unbelievable to see just how beautiful this horse is. When Justify got on the track, it looked like one of those special effects where they dull everything else on the screen and over-colorize the main subject to stand out even more. That is one gorgeous horse. Take it from a man who knows nothing about them. (You might also note that I know nothing about women, but can also tell you what a pretty one of those looks like as well.)
** I really like using the word “musings.” Glad I did.
** I don’t get why people get so revved up about college baseball in February, March and April. But once it gets to this time of year, I get it. Games all over the place with plenty of the line. Six Super Regionals this year made it to a deciding third game (most ever). Before now, I can’t name 10 players in all of college baseball. Now, it’s like I’ve been watching Tennessee Tech or Cal State Fullerton all my life.
** If you are a college baseball grinder, then you know about the Vanderbilt Whistler. (I just now discovered this issue.) If you are unaware, I’m not going to explain it (and you can thank me later.) If you are among the 99 percent who hate this guy, did you know that it’s actually two whistlers and not just one? I don’t know if that’s better or worse.
** It’s U.S. Open week. Without question it is one of my favorite sporting events to watch from beginning to end. But it’s always held at some place that tends to have mild weather. Let’s put it in the Deep South (North Carolina doesn’t count) where it’s 95 degrees and the humidity about the same (Last time: 2001 at Southern Hills in Tulsa). The temps this week aren’t supposed to get out of the 70s at Shinnecock. I need to see golfers literally sweating.
