There are all sorts of great rivalries in sports, but the one I want to attend more than any other is having its twice-annual renewal tonight.
If I could only watch one college basketball game each year, it would be Duke vs. North Carolina. They play twice a year in the regular season, so given the choice, I’d rather see the game at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Famously located only eight miles away from each other, these are two of basketball’s blue blood schools. (Conveniently, the school colors for each is blue.) There are many other great rivalries: College football has Auburn-Alabama and Michigan-Ohio State. Baseball has Yankees-Red Sox, Dodgers-Giants and Cubs-Cardinals. The NFL has the Patriots against whoever is against them in the Super Bowl.
Let’s make no mistake here — college basketball is far from as pure as the driven snow. But all that seediness aside, the Duke-North Carolina rivalry is two hours of intensity that is hard to match. They throw the ball up at the start and then strap in from there. No visits to the mound. No 30-minute halftime shows.
And the game rarely disappoints. Even though they will play again during the regular season — and perhaps even again during the ACC Tournament — there is no doubt how meaningful this game is to the participants and to their fans. Winning fans don’t walk out saying “I think we’ve locked down a #2 seed!” But they do walk out knowing how much better it’s going to be at work or in class the next day.
The cheapest tickets are going for $2,500 each, which is what you’d pay for the Super Bowl on the secondary market. One ticket sold for more than $10,000. That oughta tell you something, other than somebody has too much money.
Anyway, it’s being played at Duke tonight and it’s on at 8 p.m. on ESPN. You oughta watch. Think about how much money you’ll save.
