Many years ago, when I was a peach-fuzzed scribe at the Shreveport Journal, I was sent to cover an event at Louisiana Downs. There was a horse named Drop Your Drawers that I had a particular attraction to because (1) we got a great picture of him trying to eat the photographer’s camera and (2) the name, obviously.

Amazingly, Drop You Drawers actually finished third in the 1982 Super Derby and even more amazingly, Drop Your Drawers is still alive and kicking (so to speak) at age 40.

But I think I have a new favorite horse after seeing the Preakness Stakes — Bodexpress.

Did you see what my man did Saturday? Coming out the gate, Bodexpress got a littler frisky and tossed jockey John Velazquez as soon as the gate opened. (Velazquez was OK.)

Now able to race al fresco, Bodexpress took off like there were some extra hay waiting on him at the finish line. It was a beautiful sight to see and this unencumbered horse was having the time of his life. Even when the outrider tried to slow Bodexpress down at the top of the stretch, my guy would have none of it.

Even when the race was done, Bodexpress kept going for a victory lap, so to speak. If it came down to activity on Twitter, he was the clear winner. War of Will was the actual winner, but nobody really cared.

But you could the joy of Bodexpress during the race so much that it makes you wonder — what if horse racing was like dog racing? Put ’em in the gate, point them toward the finish line and may the best horse win. No jockeys to get in the way.

Now that would be drawer droppin’ fun.
