One of the great traditions in all of sports across this great land is to massively overact after the first week of the NFL season. But there are some questions that must be asked.

Which is worse, the Dallas offense or the New Orleans DEFENSE? Tough one to tackle right out of the chute. (Except that the Saints can’t tackle … or cover … so maybe it’s a dumb question.) How about we look at it this way – which one has a better chance to improve by the end of the season?

Answer: The Saints. New Orleans had a better-than-usual-for-them defense last year. The pieces are there and they’ve got a shot at figuring it out, as long as they don’t play Ryan Fitzpatrick again. (Ryan Fitzpatrick!)

And though it might seem like the Cowboys would be the obvious choice to get better because they have an All-Pro running back (Ezekiel Elliott) and an All-Pro quarterback (Dak Prescott), did you notice their other offensive weapons? Of course you didn’t, because there aren’t any.

Wide receiver Dez Bryant – cut. Tight end Jason Whitten – retired. Place kicker Dan Bailey – cut. All would be difference makers this year and none are still there.

So they can’t run, they can’t stretch the field for the passing game, and when they do get in field goal position, they can’t make one.

Aaron Rodgers is the greatest. That’s another overreaction, but not a very big one. The guy limps out of the locker room to lead a 20-point comeback. I’ve said this before, so it’s not a news flash — no one has ever played the position better. Take Super Bowls and quarterback ratings and all that out of the equation; he’s just the best.

Andy Reid is smarter than us. The Kansas City coach basically called the moving van company for his All-Pro quarterback Alex Smith after last year. Now, Smith might not be Tom Brady, but there are teams that would love to have him. Kansas City wasn’t one of them.

And while that might have seemed like a stupid move, Reid knew what he had in the on-deck circle. Second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes obviously made enough of an impression on Reid in practice last year that he tossed the East Texas native (Whitehouse) the keys months ago. Mahomes responded with 256 yards and four touchdowns against the Los Angeles Chargers.
