This will be a bit of a personal message — as well as a self-congratulatory one — today in the Daily Happen, so your indulgence is appreciated.

Friday marks the 26th anniversary of SportsTalk, the radio show I co-host with my loud and otherwise lovable brother. To describe its beginning as humble would be a stretch. There was no advertising, no promos and basically no clue. I didn’t think it would last 26 days, much less 26 years.

Through various incarnations, we continue to roll along every weekday afternoon from 5 to 6 p.m. on 1130 AM KWKH. (I love to remind myself that we have something in common with Elvis.) As long as we can stay vertical and avoid the dreaded “format change,” I imagine we will do it for another 26 years (though I’m scared to run the actual numbers on that.)

Through all the talk of the LSU offensive line, baseball pennant races and Ginger or Mary Ann, what I have discovered the most in 26 years is how lucky I am to have a second job/hobby that I love. I’ve had three jobs in my adult life that I couldn’t wait to get to every day.

I’ve also had two that didn’t meet the same description. Those aren’t in the same stratosphere.

There are a few things I never take for granted (amazing ability to quickly fall asleep, maintaining a majority of my hair), and having I job I love is another one of them.

One of the best things about SportsTalk is how I fell into it, almost completely by accident. But here we are 26 years later. I drive all the way across town every day, often without the slightest idea of what the show is going to be about that day. An hour later, I drive away with a smile on my face.

That’s a hard feeling to beat.
