BEWARE OF THE TUPPERWARE BANDITS

TEDDY ALLEN/Designated Writers

The column above — about Tupperware Bandits but also about the guy who invented this handy stuff — got an interesting response by a friend of mine who actually knew THE Mr. Tupper back in the day. My friend’s name is Maurice — a transplanted Shreveporter — and here is his account. BREAK!

By My Guy Maurice:
“I knew some day you would hit me in MY territory in one of your columns.

“Earl Tupper was a customer of mine when I was in the Marine business (Employee, that is) and he was a very regular guy. Had a three year old Chevrolet automobile and wanted a  rack to carry an aluminum to be able to load it and take it off by himself. I put the rack on his car, had the guys bring a twelve foot boat down and placed it next to his car. He loaded it and said that will work!, I could have accepted that as an order, but I had him take it of by himself, to be sure!

“He bought it. The car had been stored outside and was a bit tarnished from the New England weather and he was not embarrassed by it. He was a regular guy.

“That was in 1954 and a few years later he sold the business and retained another manufacturing facility in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, nest to Blackstone Massachusetts. He sold that facility later.

“I once had every sample of Tupperware that was available, Paid for by me! I still have an abundance of their wares.

“Thanks for the memories.”
