College basketball season opened Tuesday night. Here’s what you need to know after one night.
(1) Louisiana Tech went to Wichita State, a national power for the last few years, and shocked the Shockers, Got all up in there to the tune of 71-58. Wichita State had won 72 of the last 75 home games. Twenty-two straight home openers. Not anymore. The scheduling guy at Wichita State has probably cleaned out his desk by now.
(2) LSU trotted out its star-studded recruiting class under coach Will Wade and showed all the Tiger faithful what offense is supposed to look like in defeating directional Louisiana (Southeastern on your compass) 94-63. That’s twice LSU has beaten SLU in the last two months (31-egg in football in September). The Lions will get another shot on Feb. 19 in baseball. Good luck, we’re all counting you.
(3) Four of the most prominent teams in the college basketball universe played a double-header in Indianapolis and No. 4 Duke dominated the event by beating No. 2 Kentucky 118-84. (Kansas also beat Michigan State that night.) You’ll have to go back to 1951 to find another example of a Top 2 team getting beaten by at least 34 points.
And that’s it. You can now forget about college basketball for awhile. Just thought you’d like to know.
For the next few weeks, there will be tournaments in Hawaii, in a ball room in the Bahamas, Las Vegas, Cancun … basically any place where the sun shines. Big name basketball powers will take on schools with names you’ve literally never heard of and built up their record so that the fan base will be energized over a 13-1 record in early January that really doesn’t mean anything.
There will be the occasional big game here or there, but you are basically free to ignore for the next seven weeks or so. Just don’t ignore Duke’s Zion Williamson, if Tuesday night is any indication of things to come.
