This is it. This is the weekend.
Every year, summer rolls along and there seems to be less and less going on to keep us interested in terms of big sports events. World Cup has come and gone. There have been two majors in golf. Wimbledon was fun. Baseball had its All-Star festivities. The NBA had playoffs and then a draft. The College World Series happened.
Every summer is a big summer. Until it’s not.
And that happens this weekend.
Check your sports calendar and get back to me when you find a highlight. The PGA Tour isn’t even in this country. The Red Sox and Yankees seems to play every weekend, but not this one. WNBA All-Star Game? Please.
The NFL has opened training camps — boy that sounds like fun! — and it’s another week before an actual game is played. Well, that is if the NFL Hall of Fame game is actually played. It’s so significant that they canceled it a few years ago because of bad paint on the field.
I couldn’t make that up.
Actually, the best event this weekend is not even a game of any kind. If you have to name the signature event for the last weekend in July, it would be the Baseball Hall of Fame (to be honest, the only real Hall of Fame in sports that counts). There will be six new members inducted this weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y., and it’ll be cool to hear what they have to say.
But fear not; pre-season football is on the way. Real football (aka the regular season), however, is still a little farther away.
In the meantime, if you need to go on a spiritual retreat or replace the flagstone on your patio, this is the time to do it.
